High VG vape juice (or max VG) refers to e-liquid containing at least 70 percent or more vegetable glycerin. It has become the unofficial standard of juice for cloud chasers and sub ohm vapers. There are a few other reasons why you might want to use VG vape juice, even if you're only interested in flavor and don't care about clouds.
Learn the differences between max-VG, PG-free, and 100% VG in the guide below, or go straight to our picks.
Max VG e-juice typically refers to any e-juice containing 70% VG or higher. The word "max" means that no more VG can be added to the e-juice recipe without changing it since most flavorings used are PG-based. Max VG can sometimes contain as high as 90% VG and above.
Some people prefer max VG e-juice because they want to avoid propylene glycol as much as possible. Others may just love the huge milky clouds and the smooth vapor that VG produces. E-liquid containing more VG and less PG provides less of a throat hit, which is preferable for direct lung vaping. On the other hand, if you're a mouth-to-lung vaper, high-VG e-juice is not your best option.
It's important to understand what the term 100% VG e-juice actually means. It can be misleading, considering it's physically impossible, unless you're talking about pure VG—which would be unflavored. Even if an e-juice only uses VG as a base liquid, most flavorings in the industry are PG-based—so adding those flavors would introduce PG into the recipe. This is something to consider if you have an allergy to it.
That said, some e-juice manufacturers use other flavorings that have a tiny percentage of ethanol alcohol as a base. These flavorings allow e-juice to be truly PG-free. If you're trying to avoid PG, maybe because of an allergy, it's advisable to look for this kind of juice instead of simply max VG. Even if the juice is labeled as "100% VG," look for verification that the flavorings used are PG-free. It's a minor yet crucial detail to not overlook.
The following devices are recommended for use with max-VG e-juice:
Max-VG e-liquids work best with direct lung sub ohm vapes. If the atomizer has a lot of airflow, that makes it ideal for high-VG. High VG e-juice is not suitable for low-powered mouth-to-lung devices like pod vapes — it won't vaporize properly due to its higher viscosity. VG e-juice requires lower resistance coils and more power.
