Features

Not long ago (in a galaxy not so far away) vaping was expensive. In the last few years we have seen devices coming down in price as vaping rises in popularity. The OVNS Saber an affordable starter kit, reminiscent of the Rofvape Warlock Peas.

Its angular design reminds me of a chunkier Bo One and the specs are very similar to the Warlock Peas, except that it requires an external cable to charge. The Saber is just a tad thinner than the Vapeccino Mate 1, and shorter in height. It weighs 22.5 grams with a full pod, which is a bit more than a JUUL, and around half the weight of the Vapeccino Mate 1.

The OVNS Saber uses blue LED lights to indicate battery life:

3 lights – Above 70%

2 lights – 30-70%

1 light – Below 30%

What makes the Saber different from the rest? Mainly the addition of a decorative LED bar that fades through an array of colors when you vape. There are no buttons or switches to play with. The Saber is draw activated, so it only turns on when you puff. There’s no option to turn off the LED lights, but you can just conceal them in your hand when stealth vaping.

The pods

Filling the pods isn’t exactly hard, but also isn’t something you want to do on the go. It requires you to remove the mouthpiece, and then the rubber seal. I was able to fill it with a glass dropper, but if you have the option, a needle tip or unicorn bottle is preferable (too bad it doesn't come with a needle-tip bottle like the Peas).

I was a little bit disappointed that the pods don’t snap into place, despite them using a magnetic connection. I would have liked to see stronger magnets, or at least for the pods to click securely into place. I also noticed that one of the Sabers I received had stronger magnets than the other.

Performance

So far, I have been vaping on the Saber for a week or so now using Naked Lava Flow in 50 mg nic salt. The performance has been impressive with a fresh pod. The first thing I noticed was the tight silent draw comparable to the Phix. It feels a bit like vaping on a tank with the airflow totally closed off. The flavor is good for a pod mod mostly because of the organic cotton wicking. The throat hit is also really good due to the MTL draw, especially with high salt-based nicotine.

The vapor production is comparable to the JUUL. You aren’t going to be chucking clouds with such a restrictive airflow. It would be a great stealth device if it didn’t put on a light show every time you vape. When I’m in public, I find myself holding the Saber in my fist to cover the LEDs. That being said, imagine how much fun you could have with this thing at a party or night club.

Battery life

The battery life on the Saber is really good. Considering that it’s only putting out 7.2 Watts, you can vape through a full pod before depletion. It charges via a micro-USB port located at the bottom of the device and has passthrough functionality, so you never miss a beat. A full charge takes roughly 45 minutes to achieve. The LED bar lights up solid green when it’s done charging.

Concerns

I didn’t experience any misfires, leaking or gurgling with the Saber. The issue I had was that the pods don’t seem to last that long. After only two refills I already noticed a drop-off in flavor followed by dry hits. Giving it the benefit of the doubt, I tried a fresh pod only to have the same thing happen again. Granted, the pods are fairly inexpensive, but I was disappointed with their short life expectancy. I shouldn’t be getting burnt/dry hits after only a few days of using them even if they only cost $2.

I’m on my third pod now, this time with some higher VG juice, but surprisingly no dry hits! It already has lasted longer than the other two. So far, I got three refills out of it, and it’s still going strong. But for only 1/3 of the pods to last longer than two refills means the inexpensive price tag is misleading.

Another minor issue I noticed was that on one of the Sabers, the bottom portion seems to be a little bit wiggly, just under the LED bar. Not a major issue, but worth noting. I wish they were more consistent.

The only other con I could find is that the mouthpiece is on the chunky side which could be uncomfortable for some, but I’m still able to vape it while holding it in my mouth.

Short pod lifespan

Impractical to fill on the go

Verdict

I am conflicted right now. When the Saber is working properly, it performs really well for such an inexpensive device. The problem is that I can only review what was sent to me. I hope they can improve their quality control because for a starter kit the Saber shows a lot of potential. Sure, the pros outweigh the cons, but some cons can make or break your decision to buy one.

I only had three pods to judge it by, and two out of three of those pods didn’t last as long as I would have hoped for. Also, out of the two devices that I received, one of them was a bit janky. Based on my experience, I’d have to recommend the Rofvape Warlock Peas over the Saber. It costs less, and the pods seem to last much longer.

Right now, I can't give this a recommendation though I like using it (when the pods are performing how they should).
