Product intro and specs

Last year's Aegis Legend 3 was one of the biggest standouts in its category. In fact, at the time of writing this (over one year after its release), it's still in the top three of Vaping360's best high wattage mods page. Naturally, Geekvape is following up on the Legend 3 with what other than... the Legend 5!

The Aegis line of box mods has been one of the most popular lines in vaping for close to a decade now. Their first one, the original Aegis, came out 8 years ago, and I was fortunate enough to review that as well. It was the first rugged and water-resistant mass-produced mod on the market. It took a single 26650 battery back when those gained popularity, but they’ve since fallen out of favor.

The Legend line has traditionally been the dual-18650 version of the Aegis, and the fifth installment sticks to that battery setup. Naturally, it also comes with a rugged and water-resistant design (IP68). The kit also includes the Geekvape Z sub ohm tank, which has been around for a while. Most tanks that come in kits are pretty much just there to get the job done anyway, so don't expect anything super flashy out of the old Z tank.

Geekvape has never missed with the Aegis line, and I don't expect that to change with the Legend 5. Keep reading to find out how it fared in my in-depth testing and what it does differently from its predecessors.

First impressions

I’ve reviewed so many devices in the Aegis line over the past eight years. I always know what to expect, and I’m never disappointed. They know what the line is and don’t try to reinvent the wheel. First off, like the rest of the Aegis mods, this mod is a tank. It’s made to be beat up and abused and keep ticking. The leather feels really premium, the screen is large and bright, and the style is classy yet sleek. It honestly looks like something a racecar driver would use, but it’s also functional enough for a trade worker. It has all the same quality and design factors that made the Aegis line so popular. If you’ve ever owned one before, you know what you’re getting, and if you haven’t… I’m not really sure why.

The kit comes in a variety of colors. I got the Glacier Green one, so let’s go over that. Green is one of my favorite colors for mods, and this one does not disappoint. It’s not a true green, but rather a teal shade in various tones. The main frame of the device is a shiny light teal, while the C-frame is a darker matte cyan. Then you’ve got the laser-etched Geekvape nameplate and finally the soft, thick leather that feels like a leather car seat. The whole device screams style and quality. Mine came with a silver tank, though. Six of the kits have tanks that match the color, but the other two (out of eight total) come with a basic color tank. A matching tank would have been sweet.

As far as the other colors go, all of them look great, but I’d say Twilight Blue and Racing Gold look the most matched up as full kits. Still, there’s enough variety for pretty much anyone to find one they love.

Build quality and design

Let’s get into more detail on the design. The Aegis mods are built with multiple frames—that’s a big part of their look. The contrast between the shiny gloss frame and the matte C-frame really makes it pop. More mods should do that because it adds a level of contrast that helps it stand out from the pack. The premium leather is top of the line when it comes to mods. Some mods use cheap, thin leather, but not the Aegis Legend.

The screen is a large 1.08-inch TFT color display, definitely one of the nicer screens on a mod. The battery door on the bottom is spring-loaded and pops open easily when you pull the latch back. It’s rubber-coated for durability, too. On the top, you’ve got your USB-C plug for charging, covered by a rubber plug. The fire button is a long, octagonal shape that’s angled and raised—pretty standard for these mods.

Overall, the design and build quality are both top-tier, just like the rest of the Aegis Legend series.

Features and functions

The Aegis Legend 5 packs in some nice features that have been added to the line over time, along with a couple of new ones I’m not fully sold on. Starting with one of my favorites, the lock slider on the left side of the device that blends into the C-frame. Sliding it down locks all the buttons, so you can pocket it without worrying about it firing or changing your settings. Then, when you pull it out to vape, slide it back up and you’re good to go.

The up and down buttons under the screen are clicky and rattle-free, so adjusting is smooth. In the settings menu, you can control the two LEDs on the sides of the mod—five options plus a sixth to turn them off. Personally, I like them since they’re not overbearing. You can also reset your puff counter in the menu.

Now, for the odd stuff: there’s an option for “Smart Battery Management” that you can toggle on or off, but I couldn’t find anywhere in the manual or online what it actually does. I just left it off. Seems like one of those features nobody needs, especially if it can’t even be explained. Companies should explain new features properly in the manual.

As for modes, you’ve got Eco, Normal, and Smart—three modes most vapers are familiar with. Eco lowers power, Normal is self-explanatory, and Smart is supposed to stop you from setting the wattage too high and burning your coil. The problem is, on this device, Smart changes around when you adjust wattage anyway, so it doesn’t make much sense. Thankfully, they do include a true normal mode called "Custom", which just lets you set whatever wattage you want. No preheats or watt curves, but that’s becoming common these days. There’s also TC mode, which I’ll go over later.

Using the Geekvape Aegis Legend 5

The Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 follows a pretty standard setup:

  • Click fire button five times to turn on/off.

  • Use up/down to adjust wattage or temp depending on mode.

  • Click fire three times to enter the menu.

  • In TC mode, to switch between C and F, just keep cycling until it flips at the min/max.

  • When you press fire, the screen animates and LEDs activate (if set up).

In the menu you’ve got: Mode, Puffs (to reset counter), Light (LEDs), Screen (brightness), Battery (that unexplained feature), and About (info + factory reset).

Power mode performance

Testing was done with Murata (formerly Sony) VTC5A batteries. The Aegis Legend line has always been a powerhouse in power mode, and this is no exception. Geekvape lists their specs clearly (200W, 45A, 12V), which is awesome. That means it has a boost circuit, can hit hard on lower resistances, and has plenty of power for most builds.

My results: max watts 205 (excellent), max amps 42 (great—spec says 45A but close enough), and max volts 11.09 (so 12V spec is fair). With a 0.61-ohm build it topped out at 202 watts, and with higher resistance builds, it should hit 12V no problem. Like most mods, it performs slightly lower on super-low builds, but it’s very accurate with higher resistances.

Overall, it’s a powerhouse as expected.

Temperature control performance

Yes, the Aegis Legend 5 has TC, though it’s only via TCR. For my testing, I used SS316 with a TCR of 0092. It works fine, giving a warm vape at 425°F (a little hotter than expected, but consistent). Adjusting the TCR up/down is annoying because holding the button for too long turns the mod off, so making big changes takes forever. Still, if you use only one wire type, as I do, it’s fine. No dry hits, consistent performance—so it gets a pass, especially since most mods don’t even bother with TC anymore.

Geekvape Z tank rundown

Here's a quick rundown, as the Geekvape Z tank has been around for a while. In fact, it's the same version (Z 2021) that was bundled with the Geekvape S100mod. For more information, you can check my review of that kit.

The Geekvape Z 2021 is a 5.5 mL top-airflow tank that redirects air internally to the bottom, designed to balance flavor and leak protection. It uses Z coils (also long-running). Included are a 0.15-ohm coil (70–85W) and a 0.4-ohm coil (50–60W). Others are sold separately. Flavor is fine, standard for a kit tank—not amazing, but it gets the job done.

If you have a solid sub ohm tank or a rebuildable, you can probably save some money by buying the mod on its own. But the Z tank is not bad as a backup, and I don't expect the kit to be priced much higher than the mod anyway.

Verdict

Overall, the Geekvape Aegis Legend 5 mod lives up to its name. The Aegis Legend series has always been solid, and this is no exception. It has a great chipset for power mode and even has decent TC, which is a bonus these days. The included tank is just okay, but the mod itself is the real star. If you’ve never owned an Aegis mod, this is definitely one worth adding to the collection.
